How To Keep Your Loft Conversion Cool

Loft conversions are a great way to add space and value to your home. They have become more popular in recent years, especially in cities such as London. It is widely known that lofts can get very hot, especially during the summer months. We are going to look at how to keep your loft conversion cool.

Why are lofts so hot?

Loft spaces get particularly hot because of a variety of factors. Firstly, as the sun hits the roof during the day, that heat gets radiated through the roof space. It is essential that you have adequate insulation to minimise the transfer of heat to the rooms in your home.

Furthermore, you need to have your loft properly ventilated in order to reduce the hot air accumulating in the space. Measures should be taken to reduce the impact of other heat sources such as direct light through windows.

Insulation & Ventilation

Similar to any other room in your home, your new conversion will need proper ventilation. This is to ensure that the space complies with building regulations and is safe to use.

Proper insulation and ventilation is critical to regulate the temperature in your home. Insulation will keep heat in during the winter months and keep heat out during the summer. When you convert your loft, you change the ventilation requirements of the space. Your loft conversion building contractor will ensure that your newly converted space meets regulation requirements.

Another effective way to cool your indoor space is by using open windows and doors to create cross-ventilation. This will replace the indoor air with cooler outdoor air. If it’s a particularly hot day, it is best to wait until the evening as the temperature will be cooler.

Ventilation requirements

In order to meet building requirements, you will need to meet the following requirements:

A window with an opening equivalent to 5% (1/20th) of the floor area

Background ventilation (also called trickle vents or night vents) of 8000 mm², which can be closed to prevent draughts

Windows

In order to minimise the heat gained in your loft conversion, it is important to consider the sunlight gained through the windows. Limiting the amount of direct sunlight to the room will help keep the room cooler during the day. If your loft windows are facing the sun, consider using curtains, blinds or shutters to block out any direct light.

The colour of your roof will affect the temperature of your loft space. Darker colours will absorb more heat whereas lighter colours will reflect heat and light. If you live in the UK, it is important to note that although a lighter roof will help keep your loft conversion cool in the summer, it may not be a suitable option all year around.

How To Keep Your Loft Conversion Cool With Air Conditioning

Sometimes even with the proper measures in place, lofts can remain an uncomfortable temperature. This is particularly true in built-up areas such as cities and especially during the summer months. At this point your best option is to install an air conditioning system. Available in different types, sizes, colours and budgets, they are one of the most effective ways to cool your indoor space. If possible, we would recommend that you install your system during your loft conversion build.

Benefits of Loft Conversion Air Conditioning

Air conditioning systems offer many benefits beyond just temperature control, these include:

  • Improved air quality
  • Humidity control
  • Reduced odours and fumes
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced allergens (e.g. pollen)
  • Reduced mould growth

Ideal AC Units for loft conversions

Wall Mounted Units

Wall mounted air conditioning units are ideal for small spaces and are therefore a popular choice for loft conversions. They are also the most cost effective and versatile option. Available in different colours, shapes and sizes, they are easy to tailor to your style and requirements. In addition, you can install them low or high on the wall, meaning they can accommodate the shape and layout of the room.

Internal Water Cooled Units

If you are not allowed to install a traditional air conditioner with an external unit or are limited on space, you can install internal water cooled air conditioning. Unlike traditional air conditioner, water cooled systems do not require an external condenser unit. The internal condenser is installed and hidden in an enclosed space such as a cupboard. This mean that you can install an AC unit that doesn’t impose on the aesthetic of your home. These units also do not require any planning permission, making them suitable for any property.
